May 15, 2025 Meeting Summary

Brooklyn Law School, Subotnick Center and via Zoom

Seamus Campbell, president of IND, opened the meeting at 7:05 pm.

Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon presented an update and extended overview of the budget just passed in Albany.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams joined via Zoom. She thanked IND for their ranked choice endorsement and talked about her plans as mayor.

Seamus announced the results of IND’s ranked choice endorsement voting and explained how it had worked.

Norma Jean Jennings greeted the club members and thanked them for their support of her judicial candidacy.

Juliet Howard announced that she is planning to run to become a Civil Court Judge.

Rena Malik announced that she is now a candidate for the Supreme Court.

Carlos Carlzadilla, representing Senator Andrew Gounardes, discussed legislation supported by the senator.

Greg Monte presented a United Federation of Teachers update.

Anthony Orlando, representing the Brad Lander campaign, presented a campaign update.

Olivia O’Brien, representing the Maya Kornberg campaign, presented an update (via Zoom)

Javed Basu-Kesselman, representing the Mark Levine campaign, presented an update.

Hal Friedman, IND liaison to the Brad Lander campaign, provided an update on upcoming Lander campaign events.

Karen Johnson presented a preview of plans for the IND Jazz Brunch Fundraiser to be held September 14 at Luanna’s Tavern. Steve Brounstein will be one of the honorees.

Seamus announced an event in support of Crystal Hudson’s campaign.

He also announced that the next IND meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 18 (instead of the regular Thursday meeting) to avoid a conflict with Juneteenth.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
